Another Miracle for America

So far, miracles had saved Washington’s army at Boston from a British attack on American positions when a storm blew up; the army again at Long Island by a mysterious fog bank that saved Washington’s army as it crossed the East River under the guns of the Royal Navy; and Washington himself when he had ridden unscathed between two armies that simultaneously fired at short range. Now a fourth miracle took place: at Brandywine Washington was riding with only one escort, away from his adjutants, when he ran slap into the British army. As British Major Patrick Ferguson saw the incident, a rebel cavalryman in a Hussar uniform appeared less than a hundred yards away from him, followed by another rebel officer in green or blue, with a “remarkable large high cocked hat.” The man in the cocked hat was riding a very good bay horse, and Ferguson gave the order for three of his green-coated riflemen to creep forward and pick the two officers off. Then the idea disgusted him, and he recalled his men. Ferguson himself rode forward with a breech-loading rifle (his own invention) to take the rebels prisoner and shouted for them to stop. The officer on the bay horse stopped for a moment, looked at him, but then continued to ride slowly away. Ferguson couldn’t bring himself to shoot an “unoffending” individual in the back, and so let him go. Later he determined the man had been General Washington, and the Hussar most likely Casimir Pulaski, the Polish hero who had volunteered to fight for the Patriots and is sometimes called “Father of the American cavalry.” In yet another miracle, Washington was neither killed nor captured.
